A motor vehicle record (MVR) is a driver’s history from the state licensing office. It shows license status, violations, crashes and suspensions.
When carriers need one
- At hire, from each state the driver held a license in over the last few years.
- Every year, as part of the annual review of each driver.
Many employers outside trucking pull MVRs too, for anyone who drives a company vehicle.
What’s on an MVR
- License class, endorsements and status
- Moving violations and convictions
- Reported crashes
- Suspensions, revocations and cancellations
What shows up, and for how long, depends on the state.
Reading it
Look at the license status first. Then look for patterns: several speeding tickets, a recent serious violation, or a suspension. Your hiring policy should say what disqualifies a driver.
The annual review
Once a year, someone at the company reviews each driver’s record and signs a note saying so. Keep the note in the driver qualification file.
