An oral fluid test checks a saliva sample for drugs. You hold a collection swab in your mouth for a few minutes, then it goes to a lab.
Why employers like it
- The collector watches the whole time. That makes cheating much harder.
- No restroom needed, so it is easier on a job site.
- It is good at finding recent use, which helps after an accident or on reasonable suspicion.
How it compares
| Test | Looks back | Collection |
|---|---|---|
| Oral fluid | Recent use | Watched swab |
| Urine | A few days | Private restroom |
| Hair | Weeks to months | Small hair sample |
Oral fluid and DOT
DOT added oral fluid as an allowed testing method. Before employers can use it for DOT tests, labs have to be certified to test it. Check the current status with the DOT Office of Drug and Alcohol Policy and Compliance before you rely on it.
Do we offer it?
We do not offer oral fluid testing. For drug testing, see our non-DOT drug testing and hair testing.
